SquareMeal Review of La Porchetta

From one perpetually rammed branch in Finsbury Park in 1990, La Porchetta has grown into a mini-chain, but it remains family-owned & family-run. What they lack in finesse, these lively pasta & pizza joints more than make up for in vitality & generous portions. Vast, crisp, thin-based pizzas come with any number of toppings – some traditional, some not so traditional (perhaps Gorgonzola & pear) – while ample bowls of linguine with meatballs, pesto fusilli or good old spag bol would put even an Italian mamma to shame. Unsurprisingly, La Porchetta is a hit with parties & families – so don’t be surprised if your fellow diners happen to be pre-schoolers or rambunctious students out on the lash. Moretti beer on tap & litres of house wine are the tipples of choice.

This certainly is a place that's tailor-made for birthday lunches. The 8 celebratory children (all around 4-5 years old) on the neighbouring table were testament to that. And what a great time they were having – actually everyone in the restaurant was aware of the celebration as their squeals of delight bounced around the sterile box of a dining room. Is it too much to ask that diners are forewarned of this type of party before being seated beside the soon-to-arrive kids club? Clearly the management at La Porchetta think so. And was the food worth enduring this yummy-mummy creche? Sadly, no. A sloppy, undercooked pizza and equally undercooked sausage in the rigatoni campangiola, along with a smile-less welcome from the staff, indicated that on Sunday afternoons there are no ‘happy meals’ in this eatery.
