About

Malaysian comedian, content creator and now restaurateur Uncle Roger (Nigel Ng) brings his first UK restaurant to Chinatown London with the launch of Kawan by Uncle Roger. Opening on Macclesfield Street, this lively new pan-Asian concept sees Ng team up with hospitality veteran Keng Yew (YiQi, SanHao, Dozo, The Eight) and acclaimed Malaysian chef Daren Liew, whose pedigree spans Nanyang Blossom, San Hao and the Hakkasan Group.

Set across 1,600 sq ft with around 60 covers, Kawan blends Asian culinary traditions with a modern British sensibility. Rather than chase strict regional authenticity, the menu focuses on generosity, flavour and comfort, drawing on influences from across East and Southeast Asia. Fried rice sits at the heart of the offering - a playful nod to Uncle Roger’s global fame - but the broader menu explores a vibrant mix of Asian–British hybrid dishes, all shaped by contemporary London tastes and produce. Expect familiar techniques, bold seasoning and family-style plates designed for sharing.

True to Ng’s personality, the restaurant aims to be warm, sociable and a little bit cheeky. 'Of course there will be fried rice,' he says, 'but with Chef Daren Liew, there’s going to be so much more - can’t wait to show you what we’ve been working on.' The team hints at a playful, welcoming atmosphere with plenty of character.

The name Kawan, meaning 'friend' or 'companion' in Malay, reflects the ethos behind the project: an inclusive, relaxed space shaped by the multicultural energy of Chinatown London. Interiors will lean into that spirit, creating an informal, buzzy dining room suited to office workers, neighbourhood regulars, tourists and the wider ESEA community who treat Chinatown as a home-from-home.

At first I was skeptical because Uncle Roger is not a chef, he’s just an influencer/comedian. But as the dishes came out, I was pleasantly surprised. You can’t call this a cash grab - every dish was unique, innovative, and prepared with a lot of thought. Take the amber curry for example. They could’ve easily just braised the chicken in the curry and it would have tasted great. But no, they actually charcoal grilled the chicken, so that adds an extra layer of dimension and flavor.

And the fried rice! That was on a whole other level. I ordered the Chinatown fried rice and was impressed by the fragrance, and the sliced okra was such a good idea to give the fried rice a bit of lightness, making it feel less heavy.

overall, major kudos to uncle Roger and the whole team. This restaurant is amazing.

Haiya..

Kawan feels less like a restaurant and more like a tiered marketing stunt where paying guests act as "background extras" for the influencers prioritised upstairs.

For a brand built on roasting others, the kitchen execution is irony at its finest: the service is slow, the decor is underwhelming, and Nigel Ng’s absence from the floor during his own launch makes the experience feel purely "money-grabbing." Without traditional Kopi or Teh Tarik, the focus is clearly on high-margin cocktails rather than authentic hospitality.

The culinary technicalities were equally disappointing:

• Chinese Chicken Wellington: A structural failure; the pastry slid right off, and a massive, unnecessary bone was left inside for a "reveal" that only made it harder to cut.

• Seafood Curry: An unbalanced, oily, and headache-inducing mess of acidity and "green herb essence" that drowned out any actual sauce.

• Aji-no-bun & Sides: The bun was rubbery and difficult to maneuver, while the Wellington was served with a stingy portion of coleslaw and greens.

• Presentation Failures: Fried rice is served in cheap-looking pans with long plastic handles that diners walk into, while other dishes arrive on plates far too small to actually eat from.

Verdict: You’re paying premium prices to be treated like a "peasant" beneath the money-makers. Haiyaa indeed.
