My favourite restaurants: Carla Jones

If we trust anyone with a good Cornish restaurant recommendation, it’s Carla Jones. The chef heads up the Reef Knot Restaurant at The Idle Rocks, a luxury hotel nestled in the idyllic fishing village of St Mawes with panoramic views of the sea. She's building a reputation for serving some of the best seafood cookery in the southwest, championing a sea-to-table, zero-waste approach centred around sustainable fish and seasonal ingredients. It makes sense then, that her favourite restaurants in the UK can all be found in Cornwall, most of which offer some of the freshest fish and seafood from British shores.

Originally hailing from Wales, Carla's career now spans an impressive 18 years, having started in kitchens at the tender age of 14. Most recently, she was the chef director of ANIMA in Braunton, and prior to that, she was the head chef at Seacliff at Sandy Cove in Devon, where she helped the restaurant win a place in the Michelin Guide. Further highlights include competing on MasterChef in 2018, and earning a Certificate of Culinary Excellence from the renowned Pierre Koffman.

Carla joined the Reef Knot Restaurant in 2024, following former head chef Dorian Janmaat’s departure. Here, she works with dedicated fisherman Gareth Austin - who delivers fresh seafood to the restaurant daily – to create ultra seasonal menus that highlight the best Cornish produce from land and sea.

With its focus on sustainable catch and a deep respect for the town’s fishing heritage, everything on the menu speaks of place and provenance. The grilled John Dory is a standout - cooked simply over flame, it lets the freshness of the fish shine, while diners look out over the working harbour it likely came from.’

Mackerel Sky, Cornwall

Carla says: ‘In the heart of Newlyn’s fishing village, right by the river, this lively bistro sits at the centre of the town’s hustle and bustle. With fishermen unloading their catch nearby and the sound of gulls overhead, it feels completely plugged into the rhythm of coastal life. Inside, the atmosphere is relaxed and communal, with seasonal seafood plates served in a modern, unfussy style. Dishes are designed for sharing - think fresh crab nachos layered perfectly. It’s a place where you can try a bit of everything while soaking up the energy of the harbour.’

Outlaw’s Fish Kitchen, Cornwall

Carla says: ‘Tucked inside a 15th-century fisherman’s cottage on the harbourfront, this intimate spot offers a refined yet unfussy take on Cornish seafood. Chef Nathan Outlaw uses classic techniques to create beautifully balanced dishes, like the indulgent lobster thermidor - rich, comforting, and perfectly finished. It’s a place where each plate feels both timeless and fresh.’

The Tartan Fox, Cornwall

Carla says: ‘A 17th-century pub where Cornish ingredients meet Scottish influence in quietly luxurious ways. It’s the kind of place where comfort food feels special, without trying too hard.’
