India Bistro positions itself as a stylish celebration of India’s vast culinary landscape, offering friends, family and colleagues in Leeds a design-led setting and authentic menu to gather around.
The kitchen draws inspiration from across the subcontinent, from Delhi’s street-side chaats to Kerala’s coconut-rich coastal curries, reworking traditional recipes with a contemporary feel. The result is Indian food that feels thoughtful, genuine and yet contemporary - bold in flavour, but balanced on the plate.
At the heart of the menu is a sense of travel and storytelling. Dishes are rooted in regional traditions, yet presented with finesse. Starters are particularly strong: palak patta chaat sees crisp spinach leaves layered with tangy tamarind-coriander sauce and a creamy beetroot yoghurt mousse, offering crunch, sweetness and acidity in equal measure. From the grill, a whole tandoori young chicken arrives smoky and generously spiced, paired with beetroot raita, kachumber slaw and curry leaf potato wedges.
Mains continue the journey with a Champaran-style lamb curry slow-cooked overnight for depth and richness, while the Railway Lamb Curry nods to Anglo-Indian cooking, with tender mutton in a warming tomato-onion gravy. Seafood fans should head straight for the mango prawn curry: wild tiger prawns poached in a mustard and raw mango broth, enriched with coconut milk and coastal spices; it's soulful, aromatic and beautifully judged.
Cocktails lean into the same narrative-driven approach and are impresively detailed. The Baba Budan, blending vodka, kaapi coffee, coffee liqueur, coconut and spices, is both a nod to Karnataka’s coffee heritage and a smart, after-dark order.
The setting plays a big part in the experience. Interiors are warm and polished, with rich wood ceilings, woven cane screens, arched wall panels in mossy greens and soft, ambient lighting. Tables are neatly spaced, chairs are comfortable, and the overall effect is relaxed but considered.
