SquareMeal Review of Hotbox

Bronze Award
From successful street-food venture to fully-fledged restaurant, Hotbox is a welcome addition to London’s burgeoning barbecue-loving dude-food scene. Delectably seasoned smoked meats are the forte. Try the Hotbox piggy burger with American cheese, pulled pork, BBQ sauce, and pickled red onion for a prime cut of the meat on the menu. Rib fiends might prefer a full serving of the sticky, satisfying pork ribs, or the succulent, fall-off-the-bone beef short rib. Sides range from healthier greens and sweet-potato fries through to a heart-stopping (in both senses) smoked mac & cheese. Finish with the molten chilli chocolate dessert: a gooey plate of untold happiness. There’s a fun and friendly buzz to this enterprise, despite the uncomfortable long wooden benches and tables in the dimly lit room – and it can be difficult to hear your dining partner when the music is cranked up. After a meal, head for the basement cocktail and craft-beer den, 46 & Mercy.

Well worth the meat sweats!

Visited Hotbox with a group of girls, as a few of them had heard of the restaurant before and hadn't yet ticked it off their list. We'd been out for an afternoon of cocktails, so needed something to soak up the mojitos, and hotbox was just perfect. It's possibly not the place to go on a first date, because you'll end up getting a bit messy, (think munching on delicious chicken wings, with sauce dripping down your elbows). I'm not afraid of wearing my food on a date, but it's not for everyone! The food is incredible, and you'll definitely end up stealing food from each others plates, because you'll want to try everything. The bone marrow (served in a bone) is much nicer than you'd think; light, flavoursome and a great sized starter. We loved the ribs, the short rib (a little fatty but it had rendered down well), and the sides were all well seasoned and tasty. After dinner, head downstairs to the bar (we were there on a Saturday night, and we had it to ourselves!). There's plenty of seating, and some chaise lounges, perfect for sprawling out on, waiting for your food baby to digest). I'd definitely go back to hot box, the boyfriend will love it, staff are really friendly, it's a thumbs up from me!

Very good food, especially the ribs, in a casual atmosphere. Short menu but all good, and the local beers are excellent.

Very good food and service was good. The mutton was really good and short rib excellent. Short menu but this means the food is well prepared. Will go again to try some of the other items.

Amazing brisket, friendly vibrant atmosphere. The kind of place where you share a bench with strangers. The food is absolutely gorgeous.
