This restaurant and bar has an optimistic name, given that its trademark 24 Carat Colada (a yuzu-powered Piña Colada served in a gold pineapple) would render most unfit for pavement balancing. The work of Ennismore’s former restaurant director (Hoxton Hotels and Egg Break), Hopscotch mixes Shoreditch swagger with one part booze food and two parts great drinks. Beneath the clean-lined cool of the dining room lies a strikingly handsome basement bar, clad in glinting art-deco tiles. Solid snacking plates include lamb shank dolloped with cooling raita, while raw scallops are pepped up with jalapeño. We recommend small plates over the forgettable burgers, while dessert brings Crosstown doughnuts from its nearby Brick Lane store. A succinct cocktail list blends fun and skill, such as the frothy, punchy Beijan Café (coffee, cherry and rum), affordable wines focus on France and beers offer plenty for the curious. The snug corner for two in the front window makes for excellent people-watching, which suits Hopscotch’s breezy atmosphere perfectly.
