Whoever said that Germans don’t have a sense of humour has never been to Herman Ze German, a swanky hot-dog joint that pokes fun at its Bavarian roots in a winningly playful manner (its tagline is ‘our wurst is the best’). But the dogs themselves are no joke: imported from a local butcher close to the founders’ Black Forest home, they’re the real deal – thick, meaty, glossy and satisfyingly seared with black ‘char’ marks from their final grilling. Choose from a chilli beef riff, bockwurst (smoked pork) or bratwurst (made with minced pork and veal), each stuffed into a chewy baguette with toppings ranging from excellent curry sauce to sauerkraut or a (free) helping of crispy onions. To drink, the German wheat beer goes down a treat. At heart, however, this is a fast-food outlet – so expect tin trays and (Germanically) efficient service.
