The beautiful and historic market town of Moreton in Marsh is home to Henne, a small and intimate space that feels as cosy as your own home. Chef patron Darren Brown and co-owner Nick Fention met nearly 10 years ago, and realised that they have the same passion for sustainability and great hospitality.
From top to tail Henne is a local restaurant, even the name is a shortened version of ‘Mersh henne’ the former name of Moreton in Marsh. Since then, their passions have been channelled into a six-course tasting menu with an optional wine pairing. Menus at Henne take inspiration from the surrounding landscape and rich store of British produce, resulting in refined plates focused on flavour and provenance.
The tasting menu kicks off with bread and butter before moving onto the likes of Cornish hen crab with apple, salt baked swede with smoked cheese, and Cullen skink. Other courses have been known to include Brailes Hill fallow deer with Jerusalem artichoke, a honey and rhubarb dessert, and a fluffy baba au rhum. There’s also the option to add a plate of British cheeses with chutneys and celery seed crackers, if you’re more savoury inclined.
There’s little doubt, the offering at Henne revolves around fine dining principles. But this isn’t a restaurant for fancy frills. The decor is unfussy, set in a minimalist dining room, it features tablecloths hanging over wooden dining tables and local artwork on the walls. It’s a relaxed restaurant, so there’s no need to worry about dress codes here either.
This too is a reflection of the lasting relationships the restaurant has built with local suppliers in the Cotswolds, who provide a range of ingredients that reflect the bountiful rolling hills that surround Henne. Showcasing local ethical food production and championing environmental sustainability runs through everything Henne does.
