Built as a pub in 1667, and still in business, this cosy white-painted coaching inn is a popular drop-in for holidaymakers en route to West Norfolk’s seaside pleasure spots, the Peddar’s Way and the heady expanses of Norfolk Lavender in Heacham. Sit and drink East Anglian ales from the likes of Adnams and Woodforde’s in the traditional bar (once filled with old gin traps, of course) or head for the light, airy conservatory dining room overlooking the garden. Here you can satisfy any hunger pangs with plates of club sandwiches, fish pie, beer-battered haddock and bangers from local butcher Arthur Howells, or choose from the specials board. Watch for regular quizzes and monthly acoustic nights featuring musicians, poets and storytellers. The pub also has a pretty walled garden and some pleasant accommodation too.
