A Clerkenwell neighbourhood favourite, this Grade II-listed pub is rich with Victorian history for heritage boozing and elevated pub classics. The George and Dragon has been revitalised by Marc Francis-Baum, founder of Barworks. His three-decade portfolio includes Mare Street Market, with locations in Hackney and King's Cross, and has taken his expertise curating vibrant neighbourhood spaces to this unique public house.
Victorian history is preserved in unique features throughout the pub. The original mosaic floors catch the eye on the ground floor, depicting the mythic battle of Saint George slaying the dragon. Alongside these historic features, diners can enjoy an inclusive selection of drinks for both round-the-corner locals and those travelling from further afield to dine and drink somewhere beautiful.
The striking black exterior, with historic embellishments and ornate windows, is a key part of the pub’s iconic design. In true English fashion, at the first hint of a sunny day guests can be spotted spilling out the front of the pub for drinks and socialising. Inside, wooden furnishings and decorated walls create a comforting atmosphere that is suited both to groups gathering around the banquettes, and to couples sharing drinks on the smaller round tables.
Food also can’t be missed, as the George and Dragon tempts with inspired pub classics, such as signature scotch eggs, shawarma-glazed lamb doner sausages, or an unmissable stacked Reuben. For something a little fancier, freshly shucked Irish oysters are also available, served casino-style, and for dessert, guests can take a trip down memory lane with the cherry cola soft serve: a creative reimaginging of the famous Coke float.
