The Flat Iron chain celebrated ten years of steak and success by opening its tenth London restaurant in Waterloo. The chain has received praise for its consistently affordable and carefully sourced food. Located opposite The Young Vic on the area's historic road, The Cut, the triple-fronted site has reclaimed oak floors, Victorian tiles, antique furniture and timber panelling to remind you of the other branches and their unique, quirky but cosy vibe. This edition also boasts a large terrace in front of the restaurant, where guests can enjoy a bottle of bubbly or house cocktails.
Flat Iron Waterloo offers the same short but punchy menu as the other nine branches. The signature 'Flat Iron' steak uses the feather blade cut, which was once considered a cheap, inferior cut. Alongside the titular steak, there are also classic Flat Iron sides like beef dripping chips, creamed spinach and roast aubergine with tomato basil and mozzarella (known to many as melanzana parmigiana) on offer too. More luxury cuts such as fillet will be available as specials, along with burgers. As you'll see on the Flat Iron Instagram, these burgers are serious. The chilli cheeseburger, for example, uses ex-dairy cattle. Ex-dairy cattle are known for their intense flavour and wonderful marbling thanks to the extra age on the animal, making the burger extra beefy. Other typical specials include an impressive steak sub. The sub includes a marbled bavette steak from West Scotland, slow-cooked sweet red peppers, Bearnaise sauce, lamb's lettuce and freshly grated horseradish. For extra crunch, fried beef dripping batter is added, and all of this is piled into a soft brioche sub roll.
For dessert, as always, there is soft-serve chocolate ice cream. Flat Iron drinks typically include house cocktails like the Flat Iron negroni and do it yourself bloody Mary, as well as a select few wines and craft beers.
