Located within the picturesque grounds of Rudding Park Hotel in Follifoot, Harrogate, Fifty Two offers an immersive dining experience that harmoniously blends culinary artistry with nature. The restaurant's name pays homage to its on-site kitchen garden, which boasts 52 raised beds supplying fresh, seasonal produce for the kitchen.
Chef Adam Degg, formerly of Horto and a veteran of Great British Menu, leads the culinary team. Guests are welcomed at 7pm with an aperitif on the terrace, followed by a garden tour (weather permitting). Dinner commences at 7:15 pm in a unique dining space constructed from repurposed shipping containers, featuring bespoke oak tables and an open kitchen that fosters interaction between chefs and diners.
The menu is a surprise tasting journey, typically comprising 10 courses that highlight ingredients from the garden and local suppliers. Dishes evolve with the seasons, ensuring a fresh and dynamic experience. Beverage pairings, including wines, freshly made juices, and garden-inspired cocktails, are available to complement the meal. There's also a playful aspect to the restaurant, with moments such as 'Dessert Islands Discs', where guests can choose a track to listen to whilst the puddings are served to the table.
Example dishes on the tasting menu include brown butter custard tart with baked apple, apple blini with cod’s roe and hot pink radish, and potato with smoked eel and parsley.
Fifty Two has garnered critical acclaim, earning a place in the Michelin Guide. The restaurant operates Wednesday through Sunday, offering a single seating each evening to maintain an intimate atmosphere. Optional drink pairings are available.
