Deeney's was launched in September 2012, originally as a humble market stall in a Saturday East London market, but soon, husband and wife team, Patrick and Carol, saw that the immediate success meant they had great potential for something special. With their Scottish heritage, that the pair are very proud of, and the nostalgia of Carol's childhood spent with her mother in the northeast Scotland family cafe, Deeney's the restaurant was born.
Now with several sites in the capital, including those in Walthamstow and Broadway Market, Deeney’s Leyton site is the flagship location where it all began. Inside, it’s your typical caf’ complete with Scandi-style furnishings and high-topped tables. The walls are packed with colourful framed artwork, with an array of foliage and spotlight lighting that help bring the place to life.
Haggis became the hero product, which is no surprise given Carol’s Scottish heritage, and their lamb and spice blend gave a unique twist to a comforting classic. The Macbeth is the sandwich the cafe is famed for, filled with haggis, cheddar, caramelised onion, rocket and mustard. Lady Macbeth is a veggie version, and the Roberto The Bruce is stuffed full of chicken, mozzarella, sriracha mayo, tomato chutney and spinach. Tasty!
But there’s plenty more on the menu for diners to enjoy. Head in for brunch where you can tuck into everything from porridge with cinnamon and fruit compote, to full fry-ups complete with square sausage, bacon, haggis, fried egg, kale, tomatoes, mushroom, tattie scone and beans. When it comes to lunch, there’s a whole host more toasties available to suit a variety of tastes. The casanova is packed full of roasted chicken, spicy ‘nduja sausage, cheddar, leeks and a hefty helping of garlic aioli, whilst the veggie roberto includes vegan chick’n, mozzarella, sriracha mayo, tomato chutney and spinach.
