SquareMeal Review of Cross Keys - Leeds

Set in the regenerated industrial quarter of Leeds known as Holbeck Urban Village – once the crucible of the city’s industrial revolution – the Cross Keys was originally a local boozer where the foundry workers came to slake their thirsts. Now it’s a stylish gastropub with wood floors and exposed brickwork, a spiral staircase and chandeliers. The menu takes in classic pubby staples such as beer-battered pollock, grilled mackerel or sausage and mash at lunchtime, moving gently up a gear at dinner with the likes of slow-cooked duck leg, salt cod with wild garlic dressing, and maybe Yorkshire rhubarb crumble to finish. Sunday roasts are always popular, and the outdoor courtyard is an added draw on sunny days. Kirkstall Brewery ale is on draught alongside a selection of guest beers, and there’s a respectable wine list too.
