Set up by three friends in Bromley, this casual gaff has great British comfort food at its heart. They’ve carefully sourced their ingredients from Surrey, Kent and London, and are doing as much in-house as possible: smoking, pickle making, sauces and puds. Though there’s plenty for non-meat lovers – the cow of the title contributes an interesting and well-kept range of cheese, and there’s cod or lobster and chips to keep the pescatarians happy – as its name suggests, meat is fairly central to the menu. English charcuterie, steaks, sausage and pork belly (with black pudding and scallop) all feature. Start the day with poached egg and bacon on crumpet, move on to salt and pepper squid with English chorizo or calves liver and bacon, finish with sweet cherry trifle. Customers wanting to drink British can stick to local Meantime beer or Chapeldown wine – the rest of the list is much more international.
