Ticking off every aesthetic trick in the book, Seabird on the 14th floor of The Hoxton hotel in Southwark manages to make you want to redecorate your entire home as soon as you step through the door.

A plush cushion-piled terrace offers up views across the Thames to the Houses of Parliament in one direction and The Shard in the other from the comfy sofas, while the clean white tables inside are topped with scallop-shell patterning that Ariel herself would covet.

As with other restaurants in The Hoxton folio, Seabird is filled with a chatty, trendy crowd that makes it feel very ‘of the moment’. Claiming the title of London’s longest oyster list, seafood is at the heart of the offering here, with special attention paid to a list of high-quality shellfish served from the raw bar.

If you prefer your fish to have been given a good grilling before it gets to you, fear not, the accomplished kitchen team (which is headed up by the people behind New York’s Maison Premiere restaurant) know their stuff when it comes to cooked seafood too.

The plates of Portuguese- and Spanish-accented food often come with a fun and frivolous twist. Octopus, for instance, is chargrilled and packed into a brioche hotdog bun before being topped with padron peppers and sobrasada aioli, while crab croquettes are sweet and salty with every bite and come accompanied by generous quantities of addictive garlic mayo (leftovers of which are perfect for dunking a side of chips).

Larger plates feature whole grilled fish with homemade peri peri sauce and high-end cuts of meat, including Iberico pork served with the flavours of apple for a nostalgic nod to traditional British fare.

Service was friendly and enthusiastic when we visited in the restaurant’s early days, and the keen staff made solid suggestions for drinks to try from the a list which shuns household names in an effort to champion smaller brands.

A meal here doesn’t come cheap, but for a celebration with serious style you can’t beat the location and look of this impressive newcomer, and the food’s not half bad either.

This rooftop seafood restaurant sits 14 floors above the city’s streets at the new Hoxton hotel in Southwark.

The Hoxton Southwark is the third branch of the hotel to open in the capital, following properties in Shoreditch and Holborn (there are also a handful of sites around the world in hipster strongholds such as Portland and Brooklyn). Seabird is the hotel’s flagship restaurant, and features a raw bar at the centre of the dining room, as well as floor-to-ceiling windows, which frame enviable views of the Thames.

The kitchen is overseen by Premiere Enterprises, a company which was founded by chefs Joshua Boissy and Krystof Zizka. The pair are behind Brooklyn restaurants Maison Premise and Sauvage, which have both received rave reviews. The menu features a dedicated ‘crudo’ (raw) menu which evolves with the seasons, as well as ‘London’s longest oyster list’. There’s also an à la carte which takes inspiration from the flavours of Portuguese and Spanish cuisine.

You can tuck into the likes of an over-the-top plateau de fruits de mer, groaning with seafood spread over several tiers, as well as less flashy dishes such as sardines on toast with harissa, rocket and lemon, or Cornish plaice a la plancha served with Morecambe Bay shrimps and capers.

Of course, a seafood dinner is not complete without wine. At Seabird, the drinks list encompasses a selection of biodynamic wines from small-scale producers across Europe. There are other drinks to enjoy too though, including draught beers and bottled and frozen cocktails.

Like the menu, the interiors are influenced by the Mediterranean, while you can (sort of) pretend you’re in the Med by opting to dine on the outdoor terrace. It’s open for a spot of al fresco feasting when the famously unreliable British weather decides to play ball, but Seabird does come equipped with weather-proof awnings and heaters to help protect diners from the elements.

Great for Groups!

Recently booked a 30th Birthday party for my girlfriend, we had so much food and really fun cocktails! Such a great selection of small and large plates - loved to share everything. Lobster Rice and Cheesecakes are the winners for me!

I've been to Seabird a few times for multiple occasions and they always take care of us. The staff are so friendly and ensure that we have a good time. For my parents anniversary they surprised us with complimentary desserts. The food is a bit pricey but for the views, service, and the quality you get it is well worth it. I highly recommend their whole seabass, tuna tartare and grilled chorizo (delicious!).

Common sense .

I just have called to cancel a reservation for tonight at 20:45 as I have tested positive for COVID 19 this morning and the restaurant is insisting on charging me £20 per person for the cancellation.
I asked if they would instead prefer me to still come while putting all their other customers at risk and the answer was yes.
Truly shocking. Think twice before you go to a restaurant that is happy to put your health at risk to make a quick buck. Who knows where their limit is.

Very concerning attitude to a guest with a nut allergy

Very disappointed as we notified the restaurant in advance that one of our group had a nut allergy and even confirmed this to the waitress when we sat down. Despite this we were still served scallops with crushed almonds! When we pointed this out they were particularly unconcerned and offered little in the way of apology. A Very concerning response

Awful dining experience - avoid!

Was really excited for this having followed them on Insta for a while. Was SO disappointed - quality of food was poor, service was absolutely terrible and EVERYTHING is overpriced. Seems it's just a good social media manager, with no one who actually knows good food working in the restaurant itself. They should be ashamed of what they're serving and how they're serving it.

Disappointingly underwhelming and unacceptable!!

We had booked way in advance, as we couldn't get a table unitl 3 months ahead.  I am not really sure why, as the place was definetly not full.

The staff were friendly and accommodating. Then venue was lovely, reminiscent of something in the Caribbean,  I am sure it would have been nice on a summers day or evening.

And I am told that the cocktails were good. I never tried one.  The wine was mediocre and over priced.
We had pre ordered a seafood platter with King Crab legs and various other bits and additional oysters. What arrived looked like the scraps that someone had left over. Half of what should have been on the platter was was missingand there were 10 Oysters with no dressings or tabasco. When we challenged the staff, they said that they had replaced it with others things, without telling us or asking us.  One of which we had already had for a starter.  There wasn't sufficient on the platter for 2 people and the cost was over £150!! When we challenged staff about this we were first met with with excuses. Then a manager came out and began to speak to our friends instead of us, who the platter was not in front of.  I am guessing she just headed for the person that looked like her! We were asked what we wanted and I told them that I wanted what I had ordered.  I was so hungry, that stupidly I had began to eat what was there.  They then brought out 3 more miniscule ends of the king crab legs and what appeared to be a pint of prawns. Still not great, but I was so hungry I eat it.  They were full of apology, empty words and nothing else.
My friends lobster choice, arrived as half a lobster, it was a joke. It was the size of an Iceland shop lobster, with little or no meat in it, accompanied by some oven chips. Their seafood rice was oily and tasteless with 3 prawns on top and no other seafood in it.
The managements compensation was to offer to remove the service charge from the bill! The service was not the problem! The food was extremely disappointing. I went home and eat a left over takeaway.
A complete waste of money!!! I would never eat there again and would advise other not to either.
