Open since the early 80s, this down-&-dirty diner with its whirring ceiling fans, scuffed terracota-tiled floor & vintage posters is something of a Tex-Mex institution in Covent Garden.
Join an up-for-it crowd to feast on nachos, sizzling fajitas, quesadillas, enchiladas, tacos & burritos: all decent renditions, pepped up with punchy sauces such as tequila & pineapple
salsa. A few exotic combos – duck, scallop & tamarind fajitas, say – add to the appeal, as do calorie-laden puds such as the infamous Mexican deep-fried ice cream. Service is efficient &
prices are easy – especially the bargain lunch & kids’ menus. Imported beers & wines from South America & Spain add an authentic touch, although they play second fiddle to the cracking
line-up of Tequilas, mezcals & piscos behind the bar.

Big cues for tables. All the dishes taste the same. Too much cheddar cheese thrown over everything…Wahaca is 100 times better than Cafe Pacifico

With a table larger than two you'll be waiting a few minutes, but the food is more than worth it. Portion sizes are large and most courses cost around £10. This restaurant is famous for its margaritas, but be warned – a pitcher will double the cost of your meal! The restaurant is always busy and has a lively atmosphere, which makes it difficult to converse at times, but the service is generally speedy and the food is honestly the best Mexican I've ever tasted. I can thoroughly recommend the Chimichanga, which comes with beef or chicken. Delicious.

Café Pacifico in Covent Garden is the best place for tasty genuine Tex-Mex in London. At peak times it’s almost impossible to walk in off the street and get a table and they don’t take bookings, but most people are more than happy to while away the wait for a table with a highly alcoholic cocktail from the bar. Decor is themed and conditions can be cramped, but the fresh, high quality, reasonably priced food consisting of all the usual Tex-Mex suspects cooked extremely well and relatively fast, more than make up for this. The pico de gallo spicy tomato dip accompanying the complimentary nacho chips is very hot but delicious!
