SquareMeal Review of Brasserie Zédel

Bronze Award

Proving that chain restaurants don’t have all the fun on Piccadilly Circus’s tourist highway, this archetypal brasserie provides Gallic staples at low prices in the glitzy surrounds of a cavernous former ballroom dripping with marble-clad charm. Start with a hefty bowl of soupe à l’oignon or a clutch of escargots slathered in parsley butter, ahead of baked trout with almonds, smoked pork belly or something more exotic such as spicy merguez sausage with couscous. Steaks are also perennially popular, from good-value haché with pepper sauce all the way up to a luxe rib-eye with Café de Paris sauce. The separate gluten-free menu’s “wonderful choice” gets a special mention, while over 30 selections from the all-French wine list are sold in five measures. Accusations of “unexciting” dishes are not unfounded but, for those who want a good French meal in the West End at a reasonable price, Zédel is hard to beat – especially when you factor in surefooted service and the festive atmosphere.

From the outside the restraint looks very small and uninviting but when you get inside wow. The lobby has a very high ceiling with a massive chandelier. The restaurant is quite large but intimate. The menu is in French but you can ask for an English one. The food is great with plenty of it. Whine is expensive but saying that, very nice. Service is very good and they ask you if you are going to a show so that you get the service that you need to get to the show on time. Overall a great place to dine especially if you are going on to a show. Highly recommend.

Me and my other half went here before heading to the theatre we were pleasantly surprised by the lovely decor and the venue it was stunning, we went for the set menu which is super good value at £9.95 for two course definitely worth a visit you wont be disappointed, service was a little slow but apart from that it was a real treat.

Good for groups, less so for couples
16 October 2016
This is an impressive room (although lacking the pizazz of Quaglinos of old), with a warm atmosphere. The menu is well priced, and with a limited selection of pretty basic dishes. The two of us with steaks were happier than me, as my chicken was tasteless meat with a very bland sauce. The wine is heavily marked up. Service was a bit iffy, over anxious to top us up every five minutes. I think this is primarily a place for larger groups, rather than couples. It's not at all romantic. But it is very handy for a reasonable early or late West End dinner - as long as you are happy to eat unexciting food.

Excellent meal. Wonderful choice on gluten free menu but was a bit lacking on other allergens I'm afraid! Had I not checked whether the gluten free bread contained eggs I could have been quite ill! Nonetheless one of the best gluten free menus I have had - so food stil scores 5! Lovely setting and had a great time. Thank you - will definitely return when in London.

Zedel's best
22 December 2015
First time here and it was not only Square Meal but on recommendation of a work colleague. The place is with 2-3 minutes walk of Piccadilly Circus and the tube, easy to find. The decor was lovely and there is a nice mix of all ages from the very young to the ancient. Staff from the upstairs bar to the cloak room attendant were attentive and welcoming without being over the top. The food was served promptly and was excellent. I am certainly going to go back and it is very reasonably priced for the center of the West End.

A jewel hidden under Piccadilly Circus
25 August 2015
We went to Brasserie Zedel as a family and we all loved it. The main dining room is simply amazing and not at all what I would have expected from the middle of Theatreland/Touristland. The food was very good and the options both in menu choice and prices was very refreshing. The house wine was of very good quality albeit not overly cheap. The service was attentive and friendly even when I asked for the menu in full English. We encourage anyone to visit this restaurant, an experience not to be missed.

good but nothing special

having heard so much about this place expectations were high going in. I don't know anything about the chef or the management but I had been told that the head chef used to manage the kitchen for the events company based at Gibson Hall; another top end venue place, so I figured it must be pretty good then. sadly it was not much more than just good, If I had paid medium dollar for this I would have been well chuffed; but I didn't and its a top end restaurant price wise. this is a problem for many chefs I've noticed, they make a name for themselves at a top venue, then move on and soft peddle a little on the back of it.

The Grande Brasseri in London
21 February 2015
A wonderful expansive evening with friends in the convivial atmosphere of a Grand Brasserie. Beautiful room of great scale and design, good service given the volume of business. great value food just the wine a touch expensive 50cl pichet from £15+. I had a nice salad endive and Roquefort salad followed by confit duck and a bean ragout. This is accomplished brasserie cooking in volume. I recommend it heartily but recommend you book as some people who turned up were told to wait for 1.5 hours for a table, there is a lovely bar.....

Excellent service in a wonderful setting. Food was very good, varied choice of french recipes. My only concern is that some of the main courses ordered could have been hotter on arrival at our table.
