If you’re craving authentic Indian cuisine in Bath, it doesn’t get much better than Bengal Brasserie; a generational restaurant that’s been serving locals and visitors alike since 1987. Its impressively long history is a testament to the restaurant’s staying power, having become a stalwart of the neighbourhood and a must-try for those who love Bangladeshi flavours.
The space itself won’t disappoint; a wonderful nod to Bollywood glamour with maximalist seating positioned inside individual, enclosed booths, each one fitted with its own ruby-red banquettes and romantic lanterns overhead. An immersive experience, it’s a gorgeous way to spend a meal with a loved one, friends or family.
Moving onto the meal itself and the a la carte menu is extensive and varied, with a generous mixture of dishes that are designed to please all. Kicking things off with the starters and you might try the salmon with red pepper chutney, alongside chestnut mushrooms stuffed with spiced cheese and topped with truffle mayonnaise.
As for main dishes, you can either opt for one of the chef’s specials, including the Nawabi lamb shank slow-cooked in cardamom and nutmeg, or the coastal fish curry with Karalan-style seabass, or stick with the British classics. Here, you’ll find failsafe favourites such as a korma, madras or dhansak - each available with chicken or lamb. Vegetarians and vegans are very much welcomed here too, with plenty of plant-based meals on offer. The Punjabi Saag Paneer sounds delicious, created using fresh spinach, diced, marinated Paneer and a thick, indulgent sauce. As you'd hope, the range of sides are exciting too, with every naan you could imagine - from garlic and chilli, to peshwari and keema, these guys have got it all.
Finally, a thoughtful drinks menu finishes the experience nicely. Alcohol free options include mocktails, zero percent beers and soft drinks, while a range of spirits and wines are available for those who fancy a tipple or two.
