About

Located beneath a railway arch on Tilbury Road in Leyton, Azra is a family-run restaurant bringing authentic Afghan cooking to East London. Opened by three siblings alongside their mother, whose recipes and cooking form the backbone of the menu, Azra has quickly established itself as a neighbourhood favourite. While the restaurant may be modest in size, it offers a distinctive dining experience that shines a spotlight on a cuisine still relatively underrepresented in London's restaurant scene.

At its heart, Azra is a celebration of traditional Afghan food, with a menu built around dishes that showcase time-honoured techniques and deeply rooted family recipes. The kitchen takes a meticulous approach to preparation, from hand-folded dumplings and freshly made flatbreads to slowly braised meats and house-made accompaniments. Signature dishes include mantu, delicate beef dumplings served with yoghurt and a rich meat sauce, alongside Kabuli Pulao, Afghanistan's national dish of fragrant rice topped with braised lamb, carrots and raisins. Elsewhere, guests can explore vegetable-led dishes, smoky aubergine preparations and slow-cooked lamb specialities that highlight the depth and complexity of Afghan cooking.

The restaurant itself offers a warm and intimate setting, with a cosy dining room tucked away beneath the archway. Thoughtfully designed interiors create a welcoming atmosphere that feels relaxed and personal, reflecting the family-driven ethos behind the business. It's the kind of place suited to casual dinners, group meals and anyone looking to discover something beyond the capital's more familiar culinary staples.

Unlike many London restaurants, Azra chooses to focus entirely on food and non-alcoholic drinks. House-made doogh, a sparkling salted yoghurt drink, is a traditional accompaniment to many dishes, while Afghan tea provides a fitting end to the meal.

With its heartfelt hospitality, authentic cooking and emphasis on sharing generous portions around the table, Azra offers a genuine introduction to Afghan cuisine and has become one of Leyton's most exciting independent dining destinations.
