About

With more than 25 years of hospitality experience behind it, Aspera has become a popular destination for Mediterranean dining in Essex. Since opening in 2016, the restaurant has focused on bringing together the flavours of countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea, combining traditional recipes, fresh ingredients and warm hospitality.

The philosophy at Aspera is simple: quality ingredients, generous portions and dishes prepared fresh to order. Using locally sourced produce wherever possible, the kitchen takes inspiration from across the Mediterranean, showcasing the region's rich culinary traditions through a menu that balances grilled meats, fresh seafood, vegetarian specialities and classic desserts.

A meal might begin with a selection of starters designed for sharing. The tarama blends marinated cod roe with garlic, lemon and olive oil for a smooth, flavourful dip, while the falafel combines chickpeas, broad beans, vegetables and herbs, served alongside creamy hummus. For something richer, the sautéed chicken liver, cooked with red onion and herbs, remains a popular choice.

The restaurant's Mediterranean influences are particularly evident in the main courses. Seafood lovers can opt for char-grilled hake topped with a sauce of garlic, butter, white wine, parsley and lemon, served with rice and salad. The tagliatelle mixed seafood brings together squid, mussels, prawns, monkfish, hake and salmon in a creamy white wine sauce, creating a comforting dish packed with flavour.

Meat dishes are equally appealing, with char-grilled lamb ribs offering a simple but satisfying option. Vegetarian diners are well catered for too, with dishes such as the vegetable moussaka layering aubergine, potatoes, chickpeas, courgettes, peppers and béchamel sauce, while spinach and garlic tagliatelle provides a lighter alternative.

Those with room for dessert are rewarded with a tempting selection of homemade treats. The Lotus Biscoff Cheesecake, topped with biscuit crumbs and chocolate drizzle, is a crowd-pleaser, while traditional pistachio baklava served with clotted cream or ice cream offers a classic Mediterranean finish. The tiramisu and peanut cheesecake are equally difficult to resist.
