Tucked inside the vibrant new Arthur’s Market on King’s Road, ASA Izakaya is a sleek, modern sushi and handroll bar that brings a refined slice of Japan to Chelsea. Inspired by traditional izakaya culture, ASA offers a dual personality: a relaxed, counter-style lunch spot by day, and an intimate, immersive dining experience by night.
At lunchtime, guests can perch at the 12-seat counter and watch the chefs at work, crafting delicate nigiri and handrolls using fish sourced daily from Arthur’s own fishmonger. Come evening, the market transforms - produce is cleared, shelves are shuttered, and ASA expands into a 30-cover dining room, offering a more elaborate, sit-down affair.
The menu is a celebration of Japanese precision and British produce, led by Chef Shaulan Steenson, whose impressive CV includes Endo at the Rotunda, Evernight, Hakkoku in Tokyo, and Sushi Jin in Singapore. Expect intricate dishes like Squid Kasudzuke Nigiri, Langoustine Nigiri with miso and sweet soy, and Scallop Nigiri, all served with freshly grated wasabi and akazu-seasoned rice.
ASA also boasts an exceptional caviar and roe selection, including a 1.7kg tin of caviar sold by weight, always open in-house. Pink roe, trout roe, cod roe, and caviar cream all feature, alongside frozen roe delicacies.
To drink, the sake list is as considered as the food, with rare bottles like Dassai Beyond, Juyondai, and Isojiman “Largo” curated to complement the menu.
With its minimalist design, premium ingredients, and a chef-led approach, ASA Izakaya is a standout addition to London’s Japanese dining scene—refined, intimate, and quietly confident. Whether you’re stopping by for a quick handroll or settling in for a full tasting experience, ASA delivers with elegance and precision.
