Raffles London at The OWO is a prestigious hotel, luxurious spa and collection of fine dining experiences. Occupying a magnificent Grade II* Edwardian Baroque building in Whitehall, it sits at  the epicentre of the British Government, a must-visit for those interested in history and politics.

While there are a plethora of restaurants within this multi-faceted venue, the traditional afternoon tea served in The Drawing Room is a stunning way to enjoy this quintessential passtime. A stately British drawing room reimagined, sitting down here for a leisurely lunchtime feels a little like stepping back in time. While furnishings are contemporary, the historic architectural details, such as rich-toned wood panelling, an original fireplace and a grand piano, bring a special atmosphere to the space. Indeed, here you can dine while looking out to storied Whitehall, taking in the scenes of smart mounted Household Cavalry guards guarding the official entrance to Buckingham Palace.

As mentioned, the afternoon tea stays true to traditional sweet and savoury flavours which were introduced by Anna Russell, Duchess of Bedford, in the 1840s. Starting with the sandwich selection, you can expect fillings such as Arlington egg with truffle, alongside Severn and Wye smoked salmon and cucumber.

Pastries and desserts are often seasonal, and for winter include the likes of gingerbread, cranberry and chestnut, as well as spiced rum, with a yule log cake to finish. Both traditional buttermilk and sultana scones come with jams and cream, while a glass of sparkling wine makes for a wonderful accompaniment. Choose between a Louis Roederer champagne or a Gusbourne English sparkling, from Kent. There are also vegetarian, vegan and children's afternoon teas available, to ensure all are catered for.

And, while visiting, wouldn't it be fascinating to enjoy an art tour of the property, which is home to many historic pieces? Book in advance and you can enjoy this before or after your afternoon tea.
