Afternoon tea at The Birch Hotel is served in its oak-panelled lounge, a cosy setting that suits everything from a leisurely catch-up to birthdays, anniversaries and other special occasions. This Haywards Heath hotel dates back to 1874 and retains plenty of its original character, with a fireplace and striking Victorian staircase among its period features.
The lounge itself feels relaxed and traditional, with wooden tables surrounded by comfortable blue upholstered armchairs and sofas. Artwork lines the walls, while small jars of flowers add a simple finishing touch to the tables. It’s a calm space in which to settle in for an afternoon with friends or family, and children can be catered for too.
There are two afternoon tea options. The Birch Hotel's scone cream tea keeps things simple with two homemade traditional fruit scones served with strawberry preserve, clotted cream and butter, accompanied by a choice of tea or coffee. For a more substantial spread, the full afternoon tea menu includes a selection of freshly prepared finger sandwiches.
Fillings might include roast sirloin of beef with horseradish, smoked salmon and cream cheese, ham and mustard, egg mayonnaise, Cheddar and pickle, or hummus with red onion and rocket. Homemade fruit scones arrive with the traditional accompaniments, followed by a selection of cakes and sweet treats, which can include macarons and miniature fruit tarts. Tea or coffee is included, while those celebrating can add Prosecco to turn the experience into a sparkling afternoon tea.
The hotel is conveniently located for Haywards Heath railway station and also offers free on-site parking. For a birthday, anniversary or longer celebration, there are 51 comfortable en-suite bedrooms, making it easy to combine afternoon tea with an overnight stay in West Sussex. Advance booking is required.
