The Drawing Room at Brown's Hotel in Mayfair serves afternoon tea every day, including a Jungle Book-themed afternoon tea that is perfect for kids and families.

Brown’s Hotel is one of Mayfair’s most respected, recognisable old hotels, with a history that dates back to 1832. This, in fact, makes it London’s oldest luxury hotel and it retains a feeling of old-fashioned luxury in all departments, from venerable Donovan Bar to the excellent flagship restaurant Charlie’s at Browns.

Another feather in the cap comes in the form of the Brown’s Hotel afternoon tea, available every day from 12-6:30pm in The Drawing Room. As you’d expect from a quintessentially British hotel like Brown’s, afternoon tea here sticks to fundamentals - classic sandwich fillings, fresh-baked pillowy scones and a selection of precise patisserie. Currently on the menu you’ll find a raspberry macaron with lychee and rose, lemon and olive oil madeleines and a gateau religieuse with madagascan vanilla. The drinks selection is top-class as well, with a premium Champagne selection that includes Moet & Chandon, Ruinart and Dom Perignon, as well as teas from Rare Tea Company. Brown’s also offers a plant-based afternoon tea, complete with vegan patisserie and sandwiches such as chickpea hummus, crispy shallot and espelette pepper, and beetroot salmorejo with pumpkin seed pesto.

The hotel also runs a very popular children’s afternoon tea, with treats based around the Jungle Book - Rudyard Kipling was famously a frequent visitor at the hotel. It means that families who visit the hotel can all share afternoon tea together, with kids tucking into Iberico ham, English Cheddar and strawberry jam sandwiches, as well as orange drizzle cake and chocolate and caramel tartlets.

Not so luxurious
Took my visiting Mother for afternoon tea after shopping. The staff were very friendly and accommodating, giving us the nice high backed armchairs and cushions. I would not have liked to have sat on the small very low tables and chairs. Although the food was quite nice and the pianist very good, we did not feel like we were having a luxurious, cosy, ‘English’ experience. We've had tea in all the top places and for £39.50 did not feel it was quite worth it. Even though they are happy to keep piling the plates with more sandwiches/scones/cakes etc. you can only eat so much tea before you feel fit to burst so it is not extra value in that sense. The sandwiches were extremely fresh if a little boring (traditional I suppose) and the strawberry preserve was really runny and incredibly oversweet as was a fruit compote/panacotta. The so called English Tea Room is not at all cosy or luxurious – the decor is cold and the furniture awful except for the few armchairs. (IMHO) Think it is overpriced. We also had a drink in the bar beforehand as we arrived too early and the bar is looking very dingy and tired.
