About

40 Dean Street is a family-run restaurant that has been providing delicious Italian food at reasonable prices for nearly 20 years. This neighbourhood gem specialises in unfussy, elevated Italian cuisine built around seasonal produce and familiar favourites. Served in an intimate and relaxed setting, with velvet seating, marble tables and moody lighting, this cosy spot is perfect for relaxing and socialising with friends and family. Boasting a central location in the heart of Soho, it's also a great spot for a pre- or post-theatre dinner with a fantastic set menu available.

The menu features a huge selection of classic Italian dishes, all of which make use of the freshest produce possible. All its pizza, pasta and dessert dishes are freshly made in-house, to ensure the best, most authentic flavour. Start off with the likes of Sicilian green olives with a punchy Negroni, or dive straight into the tasty starter list, which includes carpaccio of bresaola with rocket, shaved parmesan and truffle oil, and mussels with fregola and cherry tomatoes in a white wine sauce.

There is an impressive number of pasta and risotto choices too, such as lobster ravioli in a shellfish bisque, and risotto with porcini mushrooms, roasted butternut squash, asparagus and walnuts. Elsewhere, discover hearty grills, like 28-day aged ribeye with cep puree and green beans. Round off your meal with a classic dessert like affogato with Amaretto and vanilla ice cream or, for those of you who don’t have a sweet tooth, the cheese platter which showcases a range of artisan cheeses.

Drinks wise, there is a selection of classic and signature cocktails available at a reasonable price. While the extensive wine list features both Italian and international wines at a range of price points, with many bottles available by the glass if you can't decide on just one.

Food and waiting staff were great - shame about the unwelcoming man on the door!

Enjoyed the ambience and food, good value and lots of choice, wine was not too overpriced unlike many other west end restaurants. We were served by Natalia who was lovely.   The man on the door who dealt with bookings seemed a bit angry towards us on two occasions for no reason, he just seemed in a bad mood. We were going to leave before we started because of this, but I realised I'd submitted my credit card for the booking, so didn't want to take the risk.  Luckily the other staff members and delicious food made up for it.

Aggressive and discriminatory

Very noisy restaurant with tables packed in.  My friend and I struggled to attract attention to order.  At last, a waiter who was it seems the manager came to take our order, but as he could not hear over the noise, I said to him that I had to shout more in explanation than complaint.  At that he took offence and ordered us both out.  He was very stressed/wired and lashed out, talking non-stop, complaining about our behaviour, and refusing to listen.  He accused us of shouting at his staff, which we had, but not in anger, only because shouting was the only way to be heard/noticed.  I can't help feeling that if we had been men or younger women he would not have picked on us like this.  We had a nice meal elsewhere in the end.  Not going back obviously and, equally obviously, can't comment on the food.
