This pretty whitewashed cottage café on the edge of Mulgrave Woods – a mere pebble’s throw from the sandy beach at Sandsend – doubles as an independent eatery and the dining room for Woodlands B&B just up the road. The lovely interior has been given a contemporary hunting-lodge theme with pure white and tartan tones. Cakes, coffee and breakfast start things rolling, ahead of light lunches and evening meals. The menu is small and seasonal, but none the worse for that – think beetroot risotto with goats’ cheese, Barnsley chop with boulangère potatoes and slow-roast duck leg with dandelion salad followed by lemon posset or elderflower rice pudding. On fine days there’s a lovely garden with decking, drifts of lavender, deckchairs and parasols. Check for seasonal opening times.
