SquareMeal Review of Winter Garden at the Landmark

There’s nothing faintly ridiculous about the Winter Garden – this is full-on architectural madness, in the tradition of grand railway hotels whose vast internal spaces are filled with marble staircases, soaring columns & palm trees. Under its glass roof, The Landmark’s lobby is also a restaurant that keeps extremely civilised, 21st-century hours but also charges robustly all day long, including at wine time. Because of the glass canopy, the mood changes with the weather, but there’s always buttoned-up service (quite appropriate, given the clientele) plus an abundance of internationally pleasing salads, pastas, grilled Casterbridge steaks & dishes such as herb-crusted rack of lamb with peas & broad beans or fish & chips. Afternoon tea is an obvious must-do, although at £40, it’s priced alongside the top offerings in the capital.

It's the setting of this restaurant that is its main selling point, high glass ceilings fill this restaurant with a huge amount of natural light that is As for the food it's rather more "homely" than expected. Granted, I was on an offer menu which may account for the more homely options, but it's beautiful, and fully deserving of its two-AA rosette. I started with Warm terrine of slow cooked pork & black pudding Waldorf salad which was really delicious. I'm a big fan of black pudding as it is and was quite happy when the course came. The pork was also lovely, as was the salad, very fresh with great ingredients. My main course was Slow cooked barbeque beef mashed potato with asparagus, and this is what has influenced my "homely" comment. Mashed potato at a high end restaurant is not something I've experienced before, usually it's a celeriac puree, so this was a welcome change. Who doesn't love mashed potato! The beef was melt in the mouth good and flavoured excellently. Dessert was a cheese board, can't go wrong with a cheese board! Pre dinner and post dinner cocktails in the bar where I had the best ever olive martini is highly recommended also! This place reminds me a lot of a restaurant near me called Soif. Also a rosette winner, the food is brilliant, the staff are friendly, but this is quite obviously a hotel restaurant rather than a standalone but, this in no way detracts from the experience. I'd probably still rather go to Soif though...
