Set in a 17th-century village inn, The Swan has a simple motto: ‘home grown, homemade’. Thus, seasonal produce inspires the menu, with ingredients coming fresh from the Southrop Manor Estate’s farm every day. The restaurant is a jumble of open fires, exposed wooden beams and cosy corners, providing a snug and homely atmosphere. Yet despite the pub’s distinctly British attire, its oft-changing menu has an Italian and international outlook. To start, braised rabbit ragu with hand-cut pappardelle was rich in flavour and generously meaty. ‘Asian-style’ sprouting broccoli salad with sesame, cashews and nam jim sauce was a refreshing assembly, offering just enough of a spicy kick. The kitchen’s strength lies in its baked goods, where freshly made breads and desserts such as the rhubarb puff pastry tart are highlights. To accompany the food, a small but refined wine list features a solid selection of Old and New World options. In all, a quintessential, and delightful, countryside experience.
