SquareMeal Review of
Pub games, local ales and gutsy food with a strong Norfolk drawl are the calling cards at this bucolic boozer-with-rooms in a village south of Holt. The kitchen procures ingredients from Norfolk’s
‘food heroes’ for a quirky seasonal menu that kicks off with tapas-style ‘ifits’ (beef dripping with sea salt, crispy pig’s ears, smoked sprats), followed by pies, steaks and hefty platefuls of
salt beef hash, faggots with bashed neeps or lamb’s liver with pea and mint champ. After that, find room for something sweetly nostalgic such as a Kilner jar of Horlicks rice pud with raspberry
jam, strawberry and lemon posset or chocolate and nut sundae. There are also plenty of kiddie distractions for under-age ‘piglets’ to enjoy while their grown-up charges dip into the wine list or
knock back pints of Edgefield Old Spot.
