Catering outfit Ruby Jeans Diner provides ‘edible Americana’ at several London watering holes – including this West End bar and events space. There’s an on-trend buzz at The Phoenix, helped by a basement – decked out in wood panelling, glitter-balls and neon signs – that regularly plays host to minor-celebrity DJs and comedy nights. The craft beer selection pushes some modish buttons too (try the Lagunitas IPA or Brooklyn Pennant). Handmade burgers are the menu’s mainstay, with extra toppings ranging from fried pickle to mac & cheese, but there’s plenty else besides. Chilli dogs, ‘hot and kickin’ fried chicken, and nachos buried in homemade chilli and guacamole all satisfy a post-work crowd soaking up the rowdy atmosphere alongside the artisan spirits, ciders and a workaday wine list. There are weekend brunches too, and burgers are two for one on Tuesdays. Busy staff take food orders at the bar, so don’t expect doting service.
