SquareMeal Review of
The Old Crown Girton
A long-standing and much-recommended favourite on Cambridge’s rural gastropub scene, The Old Crown boasts spacious dining rooms and an ample conservatory. Such attributes find favour with those looking for a special night out (without an accompanying special price tag), especially middle-aged couples and families. The extensive menu spreads its net wide, incorporating poached supreme of salmon as well as Scotch steak, alongside pub stalwarts such as gammon steak, chicken liver pâté and prawn cocktail. Yes, the cooking style, like the semi-formal decor, might seem rather passé (witness a 1980s-style salad bar, and sauces drenching every dish), but generous portion sizes and reasonable pricing keep the locals coming back. The Monday night deal (a main course, a glass of house wine and a dessert platter for two for £29) is popular.
