SquareMeal Review of The Mardale Inn at St Patrick’s Well

Sitting at the southern end of Haweswater, in the village of Bampton where scenes from the cult film classic Withnail & I were shot, this archetypal whitewashed Lakeland inn makes a handy refuge for travellers, locals & sightseers. Dating from the18th century, it’s now an agreeably workmanlike bolthole, with country-style pine chairs & tables, a tiled floor & invariably a fire in the grate. A satisfying menu of keenly priced dishes such as peppered fillet steak with balsamic shallots, fish pie, Cumbrian lamb burgers or artichoke & toasted pecan pizza provide solid restorative fuel after a day on the fells. There are locally brewed cask ales on tap & more than 100 bottled beers from around the globe, plus four smart en-suite bedrooms upstairs – should you overdo it or simply want to linger overnight.
