SquareMeal Review of
The Jolly Gardeners Putney
Recently refurbished yet perennially popular, The Jolly Gardeners is a ‘proper’ Putney pub that’s blooming with horticultural references. Gaily painted converted potting sheds provide shelter on the front terrace, while the stripped-back interior is painted in hues of barley and cornflower blue. A regularly changing cast of craft beers comes from the likes of Hop Back, Moorhouse of Lancashire and Downton of Wiltshire. You’ll also find ample local brews and a fair range of accessibly priced wines. Served from noon, the ‘great British pub food’ menu starts with salt and pepper squid or seasonal soups, to be followed by steaks, meaty pies or vegetarians tarts, Sunday roasts and a flavour-packed cider and tarragon-battered hake, chips and pea purée (£12). Finish with such nursery favourites as sticky toffee, crumbles and brownie with ice cream. Pub quizzes, games, TV rugby matches and special meal deals help propagate the Gardeners’ loyal local following.
