The Hemingway

SquareMeal Review of The Hemingway

Credit to the slick young owners who’ve given The Hemingway (briefly the Pennethorne & before that Garbo’s) a new lease of life. They could so easily have done the usual ‘stripped-floorboards & school chairs’ thing, but instead they’ve created a smart bar without jettisoning its essential pub nature. Locals popping in for a pint will find Deuchars IPA, Doom Bar & Meantime Wheat, while those in search of a big night out can explore some high-end bespoke rums from behind the bar. The open kitchen creates laudable renditions of such gastro-standards as Scotch eggs, moules, fat bacon & cheeseburgers – as well as Sunday roasts. The look is eclectic, bordering on wacky, though weirdly grown-up. The mounted animal heads, blinds, dark-wood bar & crossed rifles wouldn’t look out of place in a British Empire hunting lodge. Anything goes in Hackney.

Fantastic service and tasty food

Nice to see that we still can find good service in London. The staff were excellent. The food was delicious - try the steak. And the wine list was expertly selected.

Amazing east London pub

I visited The Hemingway for the first time today and was pleasantly surprised. Having lived in the area for 10 years I can't believe we only just discovered this little gem! The roast was amazing (gorgeous veg and tender meat), the wine list is superb and the bill was so reasonable. I highly recommend. And we'll definitely be back ASAP!

Poor food. Aggressive management.

Terrible experience. Under new Management this pub is a shadow of it's former self. Took my elderly parents for our first post lockdown meal out. We used to come here all the time for lunch. Unforutnately we couldn't chew our beef wellington (which used to be fantastic) so we politely advised our waitress, who simply failed to return to our table to address the issue, at all. We brought it up again when a different staff member came to us to pay the bill. The Manager was sent out o us and he was immediately aggressive 'If you don't like the food just say so but don't embarrass the staff, we're under pressure since COVID-19'. The man continued to be aggressive and spiralled, arguing with himself, trying to intimidate us. When he failed to, he barred us and gave us a refund. It was very bizarre. We certainly didn't embarrass any staff, we never asked for a refund, we simply gave reasonable valid feedback, as we simply couldn't chew the beef. Shocking behaviour from a grown man. Food was bad and staff were clearly not experienced. We left feeling harrased, sad and dissapointed.
