SquareMeal Review of The Gunton Arms

A “rock ‘n’ roll pub” in the middle of an historic 1,000-acre deer park – that’s how one visitor describes this handsomely quirky, country-house hostelry with art on the walls and a fondness for eccentric interiors. A relaxed vibe pervades the whole place and there’s certainly little to fault here. Brit food champion Mark Hix has a finger in this particular pie, with one of his chefs running the kitchen – so it’s no surprise that the food is defined by locally inspired, seasonal flavours and earthy rusticity. Whether you’re nibbling spicy wild boar sausages with chilli jam in the bar, salivating over an “epic” steak sizzling above the massive open fire in the Elk Room, or sampling a plate of pan-fried hake with cockles, peas and bacon, the kitchen “keeps it simple but tasty”. Elsewhere, eight bedrooms offer just the right degree of comfort and luxury (plus an excuse to indulge in the splendid wine list), while service pleases everyone with its naturalness and genuine hospitality.

Memorable

During last week's holiday in Norfolk my husband and I had lunch twice at this delightful pub.  We booked a 'dog-friendly' slot at 2 pm (only a few tables available to bring your dog) each time.  The staff were lovely, helpful and friendly and made all three of us very welcome.  The food was utterly delicious, especially my husband's ox liver starter.  Very generous chunks of cheese served on the cheese board - maybe a few more biscuits could have been served with it.  However, when asked for more, they were swiftly brought to the table. The plates were hot - another bonus!!, portions very reasonable and overall the meals were value for money.  Had we stayed a few more days, we would have been back for another visit.  Just one tiny minus:   above the table hung the photo of a naked lady bound with ropes on a swing - I know there is a lot of art displayed in the pub, but it could (ever so slightly) put people off their food.

Good solid food in a beautiful deer farm setting.
