The Green Man

SquareMeal Review of The Green Man

An unstuffy, fun-loving cider house, The Green Man can feel like a student house party what with its scuffed wood floors, colourful posters & DJs popping in to play offbeat tunes of an evening. But it’s also an egalitarian kind of place that happily accommodates office workers & middle-aged cider aficionados, too. Breezy staff will guide you through the vast range of fruity brews on tap & also know their way around the more esoteric bottled varieties. Otherwise, expect a smattering of decent draught beers & quaffable wines, plus a compact menu of hearty Brit grub – Cumberland sausages or excellent burgers made from West Country beef, say. The upstairs room, complete with a jukebox & squishy sofas, doubles as an occasional comedy venue.

I booked the room above the bar for my 40th birthday, paid for a drinks package and sent a pre-order for food. Firstly there was no communication between the person I booked it with and the staff on the day and they knew nothing about the drinks package. I had to ask numerous times to get water and extra glasses sent upstairs. When the food arrived no one brought cutlery or serviettes so my husband had to go and find them and hand them out. After finishing food no one came to clear the plates we had to clear them ourselves. All of this we could live with but to top this off the manager came in and told us at 8.45pm that they were closing and we had to vacate the room. At no point was I informed that the pub shut any early than the advertised time of 10.30. So at 9pm myself and friends were turned out on to the street and my 40th birthday celebrations brought to an early finish. We spent a lot of money at the bar and on food and there were still a considerable amount of people still in the group. I would not recommend this establisment to any one.

There are so many good pubs in London that you never really need to go to the same one twice, but this one is worth visiting more than once, because as SquareMeal have said, there is a fantastic selection of cider. So if you have that need to get on the cider for the evening, then this is a great little pub to visit. It's just far enough away from the busyness of Goodge St and Oxford Circus too which makes it nicer than others in the area. Well worth a visit.
