SquareMeal Review of
Freddy Mercury, a former local, is commemorated in the diminutive basement bar of this corner boozer. Pride of place on its walls goes to framed sheet music for ‘We Are The Champions’. Doors open on to a cute semi-covered sun-trap patio garden: an all-weather spot for a pint of Camden Hells or Thornbridge Jaipur, or any of a dozen unpretentious wines. Upstairs on the ground floor, owners Mitchells & Butlers have sympathetically refurbished the mid-Victorian tap house in muted heather tones, woods and leathers. Here you can cosy up at an open fire and order modishly presented pub food: Korean-style ribs or roasted beets with lovage pesto and feta, perhaps, followed by shepherd’s pie, confit duck leg with cavolo nero and creamed mash, or asparagus and sun-blush tomato risotto with pecorino and pumpkin seeds. To finish, chocolate brownie and hazelnut ice cream makes a pudding fit for a (killer) queen.
