SquareMeal Review of The Abingdon

The Abingdon is exactly what you’d imagine a gastropub to look like in the chichi backstreets of Kensington – blink and you might think it was a wine bar, complete with piano jazz, floral sofas and other buzzy neighbourhood trappings. Only the battered wood floor remains from its previous life, with high-backed leather stools and booths now defining the swanky interiors. The place attracts chic locals who are happy to shell out for smart metropolitan dishes ranging from Parmesan soufflé with a salad of poached apricots, alfalfa, chicory and walnuts to wild halibut with truffled celeriac, chorizo, leek and pomegranate sauce vierge. Steaks and chops get charred in the Bertha oven, while puds might feature chocolate nemesis with marmalade. The kitchen knows its stuff, service is on the ball, and the whole vibe is “very amiable” – you don’t come here to get drunk anymore.

This could be the best neighborhood restaurant if it was not for the time you have to wait to be served. Each time, we have been there, it took at least 45 min to get our first course. Otherwise, everything else is great there. Very good food, very friendly staff and nice decor.

Lovely restaurant, food, staff and service. A very pleasant way to spend a relaxed Friday night with friends. Very reasonably priced considering its location. Have also been to The Ebury and The Orange in Pimlico, and thought the food far superior.

A great local restaurant away from the tourists. It suits couples, groups of friends, business drinks or a catch up with a mate. The staff are very helpful too. We went two weeks ago and our main course was running late (not that we noticed because we were too busy talking). The waiter was brilliant very apologetic and knocked off our puddings from the end (reasonable which for London counts as something) bill. I rated the atmosphere as a 10 because it has a relaxed, friendly and classy feel to it, and I think that is difficult to achieve. Our food was lovely but predictable gastro pub fare.

I come here for the great fish, beef, roasted broccoli and eggs benedict (on a Saturday, by far the best in the area). Although the booths are nice the place lacks any feeling of atmosphere.

I took a group of people here for a business evening; the staff went out of their way to be helpful, the food was excellent and the service superb. The atmosphere was cosy and relaxing with all our guests going home saying it was one of the best nights they had had. I wouldn't hesitate to come here again for either a business or a personal meal.
