SquareMeal Review of Smith & Wollensky

This smart US import follows its transatlantic forebears by focusing on USDA, British and Irish beef butchered on the premises and hung in an impressive dry-ageing room. Located in the art-deco Adelphi Building, S&W's interior will knock your socks off with its parquet floors, leather banquettes and striking murals creating a gloriously decadent 1920s feel. Prices are hefty and so are the portions – a side of truffled mac 'n' cheese could feed four happily. Taking on the challenge, we devoured this with bone-in rib-eye and sirloin steaks, both obviously well sourced and served with 'steakhouse fries' (that
were actually closer to British chips). The weekend brunch menu stays true to the restaurant’s carnivorous reputation with dishes such as eggs with braised short rib, smoked bacon hash and the protein-packed sirloin steak and fried eggs, alongside a selection of nine bespoke Bloody Marys. A few elements of this fiercely American menu seem to get lost in translation, although there are some great US wines on show, plus there are set menus offering smaller portions and better value. Share or go with homesick Americans.

If you like Mad men, you will love Smith and Wollensky's. There is a real feel of old school opulence about the place with the art décor details and wide comfortable booths. The barata salad was fresh and tasty. The main star attraction was definitely the rib eye. Perfectly cooked and served with tasty chips, it was delicious! Definitely a contender for top London steak, although, like all London steak houses, it is pricey. I would definitely recommend this restaurant for business dinners and testosterone filled lunches.

You feel like you are walking into an episode of Mad Men when you arrive at the restaurant. Well suited to business lunches and lazy evening dinners with great steak and red wine. We only had a light lunch, but the portion sizes were large and filing and the quality of the ingredients was high. The service was a bit slow, but overall I would say it was a great experience.

I loved the interior in this place and the staff were so friendly and attentive; I love when people take pride in their work and the staff could have not been more friendly. We went for the Time Out offer of a chateaubriand, four sides and a glass of prosecco and the food was amazing, steak was great and the starters we added was amazing. Definitely recommend!
