Now firmly entrenched as king of the hill in Norwich, Roger Hickman earned his stripes at this address when it was home to local legend Adlard’s. It’s still an immensely likeable restaurant and a treat to visit, with its comfortingly familiar decor and an air of low-key elegance in the two interconnecting dining rooms. Sharply defined seasonal flavours are the key to Hickman’s cooking, as in starters of crab salad with avocado, cucumber, seaweed and sesame crumb or confit duck with duck egg, charred onion and cep purée. Thoughtfully sourced and sympathetically handled ingredients also stand out when it comes to mains such as roast monkfish and octopus with macaroni, red onion and sorrel pesto or loin and shoulder of Norfolk lamb with sweetbreads, red pepper purée and salsa verde. Hickman also likes to give classic desserts a contemporary spin – think chocolate and peanut butter tart with raspberry sorbet or lime parfait with creamy rice pudding, coconut and mango gel. Service is always courteous and affable, set menus are excellent value and the wine list comprises a fine collection of carefully chosen bottles.
