Squaremeal Review of Mr Cooper's House and Garden at The Midland Hotel ?

It may be more conventional than Adam Reid at The French, but this “wonderfully presented room” within Manchester’s historic Midland Hotel makes a real impact – despite Simon Rogan’s recent exit from the set-up. Named after a certain Mr Thomas Cooper (a well-known local gent whose house and renowned gardens occupied the site back in 1819), it’s now an international brasserie with a standout cocktail bar attached. The interior plays to the theme with horticultural motifs, patio-style tables and even some real trees growing in the dining room, while ingredients are of the highest quality: ‘stay true to your roots’ is the mantra. Visitors are sold on head chef Robert Taylor’s “gloriously put-together dishes”, a host of globally inspired ideas ranging from smoked cod and smoked eel croquettes with leeks and green curry sauce or roast chicken livers with burnt kaffir purée, to Cumbrian rib steak with smoked brisket ravioli and beetroot fritters. Desserts roam around too, taking in everything from peach cheesecake with blueberry and jasmine, to pineapple crème brûlée spiked with anise and rum. “Competitive prices”, kids’ deals and Sunday roasts (“complete with dripping roasties”) seal the deal.

Dolly Bakes :: Mr Cooper's House and Garden, Manchester | Dollybakes

Back in September we were invited to the grand opening of Mr Cooper's House and Garden, the newest venture from culinary whizz Simon Rogan. We have many happy memories of trips up to his flagship restaurant L'Enclume in Cartmel, and he recently enjoyed 'Best New Entry' and a top 50 spot with The French. Unfortunately, the launch of Mr Cooper's House and Garden was a bit of a media pow wow and we didn't get to see any of the amazing food on offer.

There was a buzz around Manchester. Could Simon achieve the same acclaim for a less formal restaurant in the city? Manchester has an explosive dining scene at the...

Gin Fuelled Bluestocking :: Restaurant Review: Mr Cooper's House & Garden | Gin Fuelled Bluestocking

So after discussion with Mr GFB, we picked our spot. Mr Cooper’s House and Garden. Perhaps not your first choice for a roast, but not only had we heard good things, we’d also heard they also had a new menu and a new cocktail menu. Just in case we changed our minds on the day.

We timed it perfectly – though it was mid afternoon, the roast was still available, and our table was free straight away. It also felt late enough to indulge in cocktails, and in the ‘garden’ surroundings of the restaurant it was almost green enough to kid myself it was a late spring afternoon, rather than the bitterly cold 1st March...

Mr Cooper’s House & Garden is located in the luxury Midland Hotel in Manchester. The name of the restaurant pays homage to Thomas Cooper, a popular historical figure in Manchester who came from a family of coach-makers. The family’s house and garden, where the restaurant is currently located, was famous for the fruit that it produced and The Coopers would often open the doors of their garden to the general public so that they could have access to it for picnicking and leisurely strolls.

The décor of Mr Cooper’s House & Garden has stayed true to it origins by offering a multitude of different dining settings....

Simon Rogan

The control centre of Simon Rogan’s mini-empire is the Cumbrian village of Cartmel, where, in 2002, the Southampton-born chef opened his world-class restaurant L’Enclume. Rogan now has his own farm nearby, which produces obscure heritage ingredients for his highly innovative cooking. In 2013, Rogan branched out, launching The French and Mr Cooper’s House & Garden in Manchester’s Midland Hotel. A year later, he opened Fera at Claridge’s, and further projects are in the pipeline.
