SquareMeal Review of
Maray Bold Street
Originally a bijou clothes shop in Liverpool’s independent quarter, this funky fusion joint is a “cute” no-frills kind of place dominated by a long communal table. Eclectic sharing plates are the deal, with Middle Eastern grills, Asian riffs, Scandi ideas, US dude food and true Brit classics all tossed into the mix. Typical on-trend picks might range from sprouts with Medjool dates, lime and sesame to scallops with piccalilli, yuzu and chicken skin or buttermilk chicken thighs with tamarind, chilli and honey, plus various snacks and sides. One fan reckons they do “the best falafel in the UK”, while wacky desserts might bring pumpkin PBJ with ginger biscuits and blueberry. Global wines, G&Ts, cocktails and world beers are a spot-on match for the food. The name is a phonetic realisation of Le Marais, a Paris arrondissement that provided the inspiration for the restaurant. A bigger branch is now open on Allerton Road.
