SquareMeal Review of
Regional Chinese cuisine is hot at the moment, and Manchurian Legends – originally pitched on nearby Macclesfield Street – serves food from the north-eastern province of Dongbei (formerly
Manchuria). Set up by the team behind Leong’s Legend, the menu deals in rustic, stomach-warming flavours with
noodles, potatoes and breads replacing rice as the staple starchy ballast. The dishes on offer need some fathoming, but there is plenty to enjoy, from gutsy dumplings to appetisingly spiced salads.
Some specialities will be familiar to fans of Szechuan cuisine, though the results tend to be less incendiary: try marinated ducks’ tongues, beef ‘goulash’ with carrots, stir-fried spicy tripe or a
rich, warming dish of pig’s intestines with dried chilli and pepper. To drink, order ‘bubble milk teas’ all round, and don’t worry about financial heartburn when the bill arrives.
