SquareMeal Review of Kipferl

For a business that prides itself on being London’s only Austrian deli, adding interlopers such as gazpacho & croissants to the menu (even if it is just for summer) could be risky. But the tiny café’s band of followers can rest assured that pretty much everything else served up by the friendly staff is of good Austrian stock. The sausages are a knockout. Choose from Wiener, spicy Debreziner or cheesy kasekrainer served with salads & rye, followed by a slice of Sachertorte. Sandwiches are an easy alternative at lunchtime, & non-alcoholic lubrication comes courtesy of a herbal lemonade called Almdudler. The ingredients that go to make your lunch are all available to take home, with a huge range of charcuterie, pickles & rye breads for sale in the deli. Drinkers should look out for the fashionable Grüner Veltliner wines.

We had another good dinner at this little restaurant/cafe. Being Austrian myself, we try to visit every time we come to London. It's very good, honest food and the quality and flavours are outstanding. Only odd thing was when my wife ordered a gin and tonic, the waitress told her they've ran out of gin. But the Kaiserschmarren was one of the best we've had.

Ate at noon: I had a breakfast dish (good smoked salmon, scrambled egg, quark, rye bread) and my friend had sausages and accompaniments off the main menu. We both then had Austrian cakes and coffee. Very good quality, tasty and according to me friend who regular visits Vienna, authentically Austrian not only in the recipes but also in how things are served e.g. water alongside the coffee, style of the sausage accompaniments. Only quibble was a mistake on the bill (item added we hadn't ordered, and a bit of hesitancy in sorting it out)

Very good food, great place, more of a “nice cafe” than a restaurant. Great for a catch up with friends and less so for a formal meal out. Service is OK, staff do seem a bit dull. Great cakes as well.
