SquareMeal Review of
Grand Trunk Road
The confident reach of high-end restaurants into suburbia continues apace in South Woodford. Hot on the heels of the debut of fine-dining hub The Woodford, restaurateur Rajesh Suri (best known for Mayfair’s Tamarind) has opened up Grand Trunk Road. Named after the famous South Asian trading route, the buzzy, intimate space immerses diners in traditional India, with a warm copper and cinnamon colour scheme. We kicked things off with spice-laden crusted scallops with roasted red pepper. For mains, there was a large helping of tender buttermilk chicken, served in a silky sauce of dry fenugreek leaves, honey and fresh tomato sauce. Sides of perfectly cooked pilau rice, and a thrilling mix of potato, cucumber, onions, tomato and spices ensured we were (almost) too full for dessert. The afters menu reinvents classic puds, such as rice pudding, and our serving of warm, deliciously rich cinnamon-infused chocolate cake brought things to a fantastic close. With a Mayfair standard of service and reasonable prices, plus a strong selection of Prosecco and wine, Grand Trunk Road is a welcome local and worth making the trip for.
