SquareMeal Review of Gourmet Burger Kitchen, Walton On Thames

GBK, founded in South London over 10 years ago, was ahead of the curve in as regards specialising in burgers & Antipodean flavours – which is what differentiates it from the now-plentiful competition. High-profile Kiwi chef Peter Gordon (of Providores & Kopapa fame) has consulted on the brand since the start, & his influence is felt across the menu of burgers & fusion salads, sharing plates & sides. Beef patties on a soft sesame bun are the starting point for most of the burgers, though you will also find bean, buffalo & chicken variants (try them with satay sauce or added Camembert & cranberry). Imports from the land of the long white cloud such as burgers with beetroot, egg & pineapple, alongside bottles of L&P (Lemon & Paeroa), will give cheer to homesick New Zealanders.

Well an interesting meal to say the least. Fairly decent burgers, some of the food was reasonably priced and the food did come in a reasonable amount of time. The service was OK to start with the manager seems a reasonably good bloke unfortunately the support staff are unfortunately not up to the standards that he set. One barely understood english and had very poor knowledge of english both verbal and written, the female staff member seemed a little bit depressed and unhappy although the lack of customers meant that she probably had the easiest service job in town… The food arrived warm and was well presented the menu itself is good and provides a different take on burgers. The aberdeen angus is fresh and on the day was well cooked. I have been to a number of other GBK's accross the country and have to say that I prefer the counter service to table service as this is a more efficient method. Overall the location is good and the actual restauant and food are up to the standard set by their contempories unfortunately a reasonably well established chain and fairly decent management are let down by front of house staff who do not, or are unable, to provide a satisfactory level of service which will enable GBK to be succesful in an area where competition is already very strong.
