SquareMeal Review of Fish! Kitchen

Tony Allan’s first chippie outside Borough Market links a great fish shop (Jarvis) to a pretty good fish & chip outfit – an ideal marriage. Fitted out with slate tiles & fixed tables (with huge fryers to one side), the interior has an attractive retro look. The menu, which also serves as a placemat, contains all the classics & plenty more besides: from cod or haddock & chips to grilled squid with a piquant tomato salsa, or scallops in bacon with beurre blanc, plus a selection of daily specials. Alternatively, staff will happily cook something special from the shop next door. Start with prawn tempura & finish with sticky toffee pudding. It all comes at a price, but that doesn’t prevent a queue for tables & takeaways at busy times.

We have eaten here quite a number of times and the food is good and hot. Also we have takeaways frequently. I usually order by phone but this time my order was ready but I had to wait for restaurant food to be served first. Thus by the time I got the halibut and haddock and chips home it was near enough cold. We were very disappointed. And the chips were not as good as usual. Halibut is not cheap. In future I will not order by phone but just turn up and wait.
