SquareMeal Review of Chooks Ealing

The team behind Crouch End’s MonkeyNuts and Chez Bob in Belsize Park have tapped into the capital’s insatiable appetite for ‘chooks’ with a second, buzzy and fun-loving neighbourhood eatery in Ealing (the original is in Muswell Hill). Star of the show is Suffolk farm chicken, which can be grilled or fried in buttermilk: order the ‘tray dinner’ to try both versions. Wings with blue-cheese dip or feta-stuffed mushroom ‘pops’ make a satisfying start, while sides include perfectly crispy onion rings and creamy mac ‘n’ cheese. Colourful salads and ‘subs’ complete the offer. Cheery staff deliver the food in enamel dishes – a rough-and-ready touch that chimes with the neon signs, playful graffiti and reclaimed timbers. Knock-out frozen margaritas are served in jam jars, while eco-friendly tetra-pack wines are decanted by the glass or carafe alongside English craft beers. No bookings.

Stay away - tricky staff - especially the French girl at the Ealing branch - Xmas offer includes any!! beer but when asked for a specific type - she says that is not included on this offer and the other is not in stock so actually your choice is limited to one of two instead of the five on menu - later we realised actually any is on offer and available - we wanted the offer burger without bacon - she said sure no probs - alas when the burger came it was with bacon - when pointed out she apologised - took it back but - back within a couple of minutes - no doubt simply went in the kitchen took out the bacon and brought it back - very unfair. overall expensive small burgers - and lastly - they automatically charge 12.5% service charge - not optional - so please avoid
