601 Queen’s Road
Bang in the centre of Wimbledon – by the tube and within walking distance of the famous tennis courts – this is the sixth manifestation of Darwin & Wallace’s mini-chain of casual all-day bars. Like elder siblings such as No.197 Chiswick Fire Station, it sports a bright, contemporary design with hints of Danish hygge, though with an eye firmly on its locality. A large year-round terrace is a special feature, inherited from The Terrace brasserie, the venue’s previous incarnation. A menu of sustainably sourced food is served throughout the day, so you might start with eggs Benedict or a breakfast rice bowl, or lunch on small plates, including crispy polenta squid. Alternatively, plump for main courses of beetroot and barley risotto, or coconut-poached chicken salad. Likewise, drinks cover most eventualities – from an enticing global wine list arranged by style, via bottled craft beers, to a refreshing roster of cocktails. Try the Gooseberry Smash before watching a volley or two of tennis down the road.
